Fraunhofer HHI works on high-performance photonic components and sophisticated monolithic and hybrid photonic integrated circuits. These are developed for applications including quantum technologies, telecommunications, datacom, and sensing. Our in-house wafer fabrication - utilizing InP, TFLN, SiN, and polymer technologies - enables transmission rates of 200 Gbit/s, 400 Gbit/s, and beyond.Fraunhofer HHI also delivers complete turn-key systems for quantum key distribution, fiber-optic measurement, and terahertz spectroscopy. Our research focuses on advanced high-bit-rate fiber-optic networks, digital signal processing, data analytics, AI-driven photonic network optimization, and optical wireless communication.We further excel in diverse fields such as explainable artificial intelligence, wireless communication—leading groundbreaking projects for 5G and 6G—and cutting-edge video imaging and coding technologies. Our innovations include AI-enhanced video compression methods, immersive media experiences, and tools for improving image quality across platforms.
